Traditional Chinese domino games
The oldest known manual on the game of dominoes is Xuan He Pai Pu. Chinese scholar Qu You derived the word “pu” for “game of dominoes” from the earliest surviving example. During the early nineteenth century, the game was introduced to Europe via Italian missionaries. The name “domino” derives from the fact that it resembles carnival games such as dice and pupai.
In a game of skillful dominoes, players play in pairs and fours to reach a certain number of points, usually 61. Players take turns dealing and playing dominoes to match the open end. If a player matches all of their pips at an open end, he or she scores a point. A total divisible by five or three is worth one point. In other words, it is not the player who knocks the last domino but plays the last domino.
Western domino games
If you’ve ever played Western Dominoes, you probably know that the rules are slightly different from Chinese domino games. In contrast to Western dominoes, which are a game of chance with a strong element of skill, Chinese games place more emphasis on total spots on each tile rather than on the value of the spotted suit on either end.
