The Sidney Prize and the Sydney Peace Prize

The sidney prize is a monthly award that honors outstanding journalism. The winner is chosen by a panel of judges and is announced on the second Wednesday of each month. Nominations are accepted for work that appeared in newspapers, magazines, or online. Submissions must be submitted by the end of the previous month. The winner receives a $1,000 prize, along with an honorarium and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. The Sidney prize is sponsored by the Wittenberg East Asian Studies Journal. The winners are also published in the journal.

The prize is named after Sidney Hollander, who was an American businessman and philanthropist who supported social welfare reforms and civil rights initiatives in his home city of Baltimore. The prize is awarded for efforts towards equal rights for African Americans. The prize is administered by the Sidney Hillman Foundation, an organization with ties to the labor movement. The foundation’s board of trustees includes former union leaders from Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America and Workers United, SEIU. The foundation is led by former Amalgamated president emeritus Bruce Raynor.

Each year, the Sydney Peace Prize is awarded to an individual who has promoted “peace with justice”. The 2024 winner of the Sydney peace prize was Nazanin Boniadi, an Iranian human rights activist who was arrested and charged with espionage. The prize was formally presented by the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, at Sydney Town Hall on November 2024.

In addition to the main prize, there are four runners-up prizes. The winning story will be published in Overland’s autumn edition, while the runners-up stories will appear online. The runner-ups are also eligible to win rating prizes (subject to 6 players in each division). The ratings are determined by ACF’s ratings. Prizes not claimed within 3 months will be forfeited and reinvested in promoting chess in Sydney.

Located in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, Event Cinemas is Australia’s leading independent film and DVD retailer. Founded in 1994, Event Cinemas now operates over 300 stores across the country. The Sidney prize is an annual award given to a student at the University of Sydney who produces the best piece of work in the preceding year on any topic concerning metaphysics or epistemology. The prize was established in 2012 and is kindly funded by Dr Alan Levy, who is a founding father of Consumer Culture Theory. The prize is open to all students, including those who are not enrolled in the Department of Philosophy. The prize is accompanied by an honorarium of $1500. An honorable mention may also be awarded. The competition is adjudicated by a committee consisting of members of the department and a representative of the School of Psychology. The committee makes its decision based on the quality of the work, taking into account the student’s level of study.
