Chinese dominoes
There are many stories surrounding the creation of Chinese dominoes. According to Dr. Gustav Schlegel, the game originated in 1120 AD, and was invented by a statesman to entertain his soldiers during night watches. According to other sources, the game was invented by an unknown stateman, and was later locked away in the imperial treasury. The first recorded use of dominoes dates back to the reign of Kao-Tsung, a famous Chinese general.
Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known wooden Chinese dominoes, dating back to the early Ming dynasty. These dominoes still retain their dot values, and even their original color! A full set of Chinese dominoes consists of 32 dominoes. Each tile has a painted dot indicating the number, and they are stacked in rows of eight to ten tiles high. Unlike Western dominoes, Chinese dominoes are not played with a spinner; instead, they are held like playing cards.
European dominoes
