A Beginner’s Guide to Dominoes

domino

If you have never heard of dominoes, you are missing out! This family of tile-based games has become popular worldwide, and is played by everyone from children to adults. Dominoes are made up of rectangular tiles with two square ends marked with different numbers. When you place two dominoes together, they form a triangle, and you must move them to complete the square. If you move a domino to the end of the triangle, you win!

Chinese dominoes

There are many stories surrounding the creation of Chinese dominoes. According to Dr. Gustav Schlegel, the game originated in 1120 AD, and was invented by a statesman to entertain his soldiers during night watches. According to other sources, the game was invented by an unknown stateman, and was later locked away in the imperial treasury. The first recorded use of dominoes dates back to the reign of Kao-Tsung, a famous Chinese general.

Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known wooden Chinese dominoes, dating back to the early Ming dynasty. These dominoes still retain their dot values, and even their original color! A full set of Chinese dominoes consists of 32 dominoes. Each tile has a painted dot indicating the number, and they are stacked in rows of eight to ten tiles high. Unlike Western dominoes, Chinese dominoes are not played with a spinner; instead, they are held like playing cards.

European dominoes

There are many differences between American and European dominoes. For one, American dominoes are round, while European-style dominoes are rectangular and made of wood or ivory. They feature contrasting black and white pips. As a result, European-style dominoes are divided into pairs, each representing one dice combination. Today, the game has spread to many different regions and given rise to several variations.

Western dominoes

While Chinese and European dominoes differ slightly in the number of tiles, they both use a double-six tile set. Western dominoes are based on a set of 21 combination tiles, while Chinese dominoes use a different distribution of 32 tiles. In both games, the number of tiles to be drawn depends on how many players are playing and the size of the set. Typically, dominoes come in sets of two to twelve.

Chinese dominoes are similar to western versions, but differ in the number of pieces and how they are played. Chinese dominoes were originally two-sided, with different colors on each side. They were not known in Europe until the 18th century, and are thought to have been invented in the Dominican Republic. The dark spots on the light faces reminded people of the eyeholes of a masquerade mask, so the game was named after them.

Variations of dominoes

Various types of dominoes have been invented over the centuries. The original game of dominoes dates back to China around 1100AD. It later gained popularity in Europe during the early 18th century. The dominoes used in classic versions of the game are made of bone, ivory, wood, or stone. Modern dominoes are made of plastic or synthetic materials. The most common set of dominoes includes 28 tiles. Each tile is about two inches long, one inch wide, and three/8ths thick.

The most basic variant of domino is the block game, in which two players take turns selecting seven tiles from a set of double-six tiles. Players alternately extend their lines of play. The first player to reach the target total wins, and the loser is out if they get the lowest total. Various countries have developed their own variations of the game. Some of these are discussed below. You can try out some of the popular variations!
