The NUS Singapore History Prize is awarded to a book-length publication that contributes to the knowledge of Singapore’s history. It is open to any published work in English on any aspect of Singapore’s history that was written and published between 1 June 2021 and 31 May 2024. The work must be authored or co-authored, and must be a book.
The prize is administered by the National University of Singapore, with a jury comprising prominent historians and academics from Singapore and abroad. A winner is selected annually and awarded a medal in silver, designed by the artist Ang Yee. The obverse of the medal depicts the State Arms of Singapore, while the reverse features the words “PINGAT BAKTI MASYARAKAT” and two laurels.
In keeping with the sustainability theme, the event featured a green carpet, with William wearing a 10-year-old dark green blazer by Alexander McQueen. Yen and Mbatha wore dresses by McCartney, whose brand is known for its eco-friendly fabrics. The glitzy ceremony, which was held at the theater at state-owned Mediacorp Campus, included performances by bands One Republic and Bastille. It was co-hosted by actors Hannah Waddingham and Sterling K. Brown, and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
During his visit to Singapore, the prince will meet the prize’s finalists and showcase their innovation projects aimed at combatting climate change. He will also attend a United for Wildlife summit, featuring representatives of law enforcement agencies, conservation groups and corporations working to tackle the global trade in illegal wildlife products, estimated at $20 billion a year.
The Kwek Hong Png Valedictorian Awards recognises individuals at the Singapore Management University who embody diligence, tenacity, valour and compassion in the pursuit of progress, success and leadership in their careers, and in their contribution to society. In addition, the top three finalists will be offered mentorship and seed funding from the Temasek Trust, and the opportunity to pitch their ideas at an annual investor conference in 2020. The event is held in honour of the late Singaporean entrepreneur and founder of property firm CapitaLand, who endorsed the importance of young people to be able to make a difference through their passions, knowledge and skills.
